Lead Teachers run two professional development days for teachers in the trial intervention group. In the Mastering Maths RCT these were run in four different locations around the country, and Lead Teachers worked in small teams of 3 or 4 to run the professional development.

Professional development day 2
Lead Teachers run five Lesson Study Cluster meetings in five windows. Each group chooses one of the twelve research lesson to focus on in each window. Lead teachers worked with the development team at the University of Nottingham to develop a framework for Lead Teacher behaviours and a framework for trial teacher behaviours in cluster meetings.
In each meeting, the cluster group observes one from the group teaching the chosen lesson. In their observations they use a specially designed observation form, which reminds them of the five Key Principles to look out for and also provides a research focus with the use of two research questions (one mathematical and one pedagogical). After the lesson, the Lead Teacher runs the post-lesson discussion, supported by the lesson study guidance, which includes a reminder of the trial teacher behaviours that everyone is aiming for, a short reminder of the usual way to orchestrate the discussion and some question prompts to use to get the discussion going (if needed).
In the second part of the cluster meeting, the Lead Teacher introduces the teachers to the next lesson the group has chosen to focus on. The Lead Teachers are provided with guidance and a PowerPoint to use when introducing the next lesson. PowerPoints include links to short videos of parts of the lesson used, for example, to demonstrate how one teacher approached teaching the lesson or one pair of students approached a task.
Sometimes teachers are unable to attend a cluster meeting, and sometimes teachers and Lead Teachers want to remind themselves about the design of the research lessons, so they are able to work through Desmos self-study materials.
